SLC vs PVU: which Utah airport should you fly from?
If your destination is served by both airports, PVU almost always wins for Utah County travelers: cheaper parking, shorter drive, faster security, and ultra-low-cost carrier base fares that beat SLC. But PVU only flies to about 20 destinations, and most are leisure routes. For Hawaii, Europe, Asia, most of Mexico, and most major U.S. business hubs, SLC is the only realistic option. Here's the decision tree.

Quick comparison
- Destinations served: SLC ~90 nonstop destinations across 17 countries · PVU ~20 destinations, primarily domestic leisure
- Airlines: SLC = Delta (hub), United, American, Southwest, Frontier, Alaska, JetBlue, Spirit, Allegiant · PVU = Breeze, Allegiant, seasonal American
- Drive from central Provo: SLC = 50–75 min · PVU = 10 min
- Drive from Lehi: SLC = 30–45 min · PVU = 15 min
- Parking: SLC economy = $12/day + shuttle · PVU economy = $7/day, walk to terminal
- Security wait at peak: SLC = 30–45 min · PVU = under 10 min
- TSA PreCheck: both airports have PreCheck lanes
When PVU wins
Three scenarios where flying PVU clearly beats driving to SLC for Utah County travelers:
- You're flying to Phoenix-Mesa, Vegas, LAX, Tampa, or Orlando. These are PVU's most-served destinations and the ULCC base fares routinely undercut SLC by $50–$100 round-trip. Add parking and drive-time savings on top.
- You're going for a long weekend with no checked bag. ULCC à la carte fees can add up, but if you can carry on, PVU base fares stay attractive. The convenience tax of SLC matters most on short trips.
- You're traveling with kids. The shorter drive, faster security, and tiny terminal make PVU dramatically easier on parents than SLC's main terminal at peak times.
When SLC wins
SLC is the right call when:
- Your destination isn't served from PVU. This covers all of Hawaii, all of Europe, all of Asia, all of South America, Canada beyond seasonal Vancouver, and most major U.S. business hubs (NYC, DC, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Seattle, San Francisco).
- You're flying a major carrier for status or upgrades. Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, and American AAdvantage all run their bulk Utah operations through SLC. PVU doesn't help with status earning.
- You're checking multiple bags. ULCC bag fees can wipe out the PVU base-fare advantage. Free checked bags on Delta or Southwest from SLC often net cheaper than the PVU itinerary plus bag fees.
- You need flexibility. SLC's denser schedule means more rebooking options if your flight gets canceled. PVU's twice-weekly flights to some destinations leave you stranded longer if something goes wrong.
The break-even math
A rough decision rule for Utah County travelers comparing PVU vs SLC on a route both serve:
- Add $20–$35 in parking + gas savings to the PVU itinerary's cost.
- Add $35 per checked bag round-trip on PVU's ULCCs.
- Add $25 for seat selection on PVU's ULCCs (free on most SLC carriers).
- Subtract 90 minutes of total travel time from the SLC option (45-minute drive each way).
Deal Wings tracks both airports. During onboarding you choose one or both, and you can change it any time from settings. Many Utah Valley travelers receive alerts for both and pick whichever flies the cheapest fare to that month's target destination.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to fly out of Provo (PVU) or Salt Lake City (SLC)?
On routes both airports serve, PVU's base fare is usually cheaper because Breeze and Allegiant are ultra-low-cost carriers. After ULCC bag and seat fees, total trip cost can match SLC. Add parking and drive-time savings and PVU usually still wins for Utah County travelers on short, light-luggage trips.
Does Delta fly out of Provo Airport?
No. Delta only operates from Salt Lake City International (SLC). Provo Airport (PVU) is served by Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, and seasonal American Airlines to Dallas/Fort Worth.
How early should I arrive at PVU vs SLC?
PVU's security and check-in are typically under 15 minutes total; arriving 60 minutes before a flight is enough on most days. SLC's main terminal can hit 45-minute security waits at peak times; plan to arrive 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2 hours before an international flight.
Can I fly internationally from Provo Airport?
Only via connection. PVU does not have any nonstop international flights. The closest you'll get is connecting through PHX, LAX, or DFW on a PVU itinerary. For most international travel from Utah, the SLC nonstop is significantly faster and often cheaper after factoring in the connection.
